Are Heat Pumps an efficient solution to heat and cool your home?

Yes! Heat pumps are a more energy-efficient way to heat and cool a home because they move heat rather than generating it, allowing them to produce significantly more heat energy than the electricity they consume. This "transferring" process is more efficient than traditional methods like electric resistance heating or burning fuel. While their efficiency for heating can decrease in very cold temperatures, modern heat pumps with new technology are more capable in cold climates, and they provide efficient cooling comparable to an air conditioner.

SIMPLIFIED INSTALLATION

Ductless mini-split heat pumps offer a simplified installation process compared to traditional HVAC systems. This makes them an excellent option for heating and cooling in a variety of situations, including retrofitting older homes, adding to existing structures, or conditioning single rooms.

How ductless installation is simplified

  • No new ductwork needed: The biggest installation difference is that ductless systems do not require the installation of new air ducts, which is a major, disruptive, and costly part of installing traditional HVAC systems.

  • Small hole for connections: The indoor and outdoor units are connected by a small conduit that only requires a three-inch hole to be drilled through an exterior wall. This causes minimal disruption to your home's structure.

  • Fast installation: Because there is no need for invasive ductwork installation, a professional can often complete a single-zone ductless heat pump installation in less than a day.

  • Flexible placement: The indoor units, or "heads," can be installed in a variety of locations, such as on a wall, suspended from the ceiling, or on the floor. The outdoor unit can be placed up to 50 feet away, allowing for discreet placement.

  • DIY options available: Some manufacturers, like MRCOOL, even offer DIY-specific mini-split heat pumps with pre-charged refrigerant lines, making it possible for homeowners to install the system themselves without special tools.

Benefits of the simplified installation

  • Ideal for renovations and additions: Ductless heat pumps are perfect for existing homes without existing ductwork, and for additions like sunrooms or garages where extending ducts would be impractical.

  • Minimized disruption: The fast installation process with minimal cutting and drilling is far less invasive than installing a traditional ducted system.

  • Reduced energy loss: The absence of ducts also leads to greater energy efficiency. With traditional ducted systems, up to 30% of energy can be lost through ductwork in unconditioned spaces like attics.

  • Zoned heating and cooling: Ductless heat pumps provide the option for zoned temperature control by connecting a single outdoor unit to multiple indoor units, each with its own thermostat. This allows you to heat or cool individual rooms, saving energy and money.
